Lego Harry Potter and The Social Network exam practice!!

How do the texts show changes in the ways the audience relates to and uses the media? (8marks)

Both of the texts show different ways in which the audience uses the media, the first text connotes the changes in the way the audience relates to the media through the use of, music. The soundtrack is the same as the theme music from the Harry Potter movies, the music is therefore recognised, and a link can be made between the movie and the Lego building blocks. The language used within the advertisement is very specific, the repetition of the personal pronoun 'you' and 'your' engages the audience, (audience interaction). Also there is an option where the player can play on their own or with a friend, this is widening the audience for the game.
The age certificate for the Harry Potter films are 12A, and therefore children under the age of 12 can not see the film without and 'A'dult present with them. This is contrasted to the certificate for the lego game for Harry Potter which is for 10+, this emphasises that the game is more suitable and relevant for younger children compared to the actual film.
The second text

Classwork!!

Media representations rarely challenge the dominant values of society nor do they give a voice to those with little power. To what extent is this true for the group or place you have studied? Why?

Within the ‘Heat of the night’ (1967) the black character is often misjudged. An example being when he gets verbally abused and arrested by the white police officers, merely because he has too much money in his wallet. However, when the white police man finds out that the black male is a police officer in a different state, he does not challenge him. In conclusion the representation of African Americans is rarely challenged. The white police officer assumed that he was of an higher economical status compared to the African American and therefore, thought that he had more power. This is a stereotypical view that white people have more economical power compared to African American’s. (James Monaco, Racism pervades American film because it is a basic stain in American history.

Stereotypes have changed dramatically since earlier films, such as Gone with the Wind (1939), where societies were segregated by race, Hattie McDaniels who won an Oscar for the best supporting actress was not allowed to go to the premiere of the film due to the state being segregated by race. This is outdated, because recent films such as Monsters Ball (2001) where Halle Berry won an Oscar for the best supporting actress. Within her acceptance speech Halle Berry states : “It's for the women that stand beside me.....it's for every nameless, faceless woman of colour that now has a chance because this door tonight has been opened. This connotes that she is proud of her roots and also it is made obvious that the sequence of events have changed, because black women within the 1930’s were not allowed to go to certain places. Hattie McDaniels quotes back from the 1930’s : " I am certain that my broad smile could never be termed an inane grin. Are we to forgo all comedy parts because we are Negroes? " Although Hattie McDaniel’s is talking about receiving a role within the comedy industry. the quote denotes that she is being discriminated against due to the colour of her skin.

In conclusion one could say African American’s rarely challenge the dominant ideologies of society, this is made clear through the use contemporary and early black hollywood cinema, therefore this is a binary opposition.

Representations of teenagers within 'Skins'

The episode starts off with Tony lying in his bed., with two bodies on his duvet cover, one of which is a man and one which is a woman. They are both naked. Tony is the focal/main character and protagonist within Skins and this is emphasised through the opening sequence.

What about Tony's parents - What are their representations like?
Tony's father is a stereotypical representation, he is a 'normal' view of how a father would act with children like his.
- daughter who doesn't come home at all, and who expects her brother to cover for her whilst she gets changed and acts like she's done nothing wrong.
- A son who will go to stupid extents in order to get attention. Also he will do anything to wind his dad up. The son is rebellious and immature : encouraging his friends to have sex.

What do you think Tony's representation is? Think about camera shots and his behaviour?
Tony is represented to be a clever and smart teenager but a very rebellious and trouble making one at that. This connotes that he is in control of how he acts, and is not influenced by his friends (he influences his friends).

Think about stereotypes, counter types?

What do you think Tony's representation fit in to the genre?

What is the genre? How does Tony's representation fit in to the genre?

Can we tell how the narrative will unfold?

There is hegemony within the narrative of skins, the main example being : Tony is the leader of his friend group, he is the individual organising the 'event' where one of his friends is going to lose their virginity. Tony is very open about this topic and this connotes that he has dominance, he talks openly on the bus about his friends 'virginity'. He is telling his friend, who and when he is going to have sex, this signifies that his friends are recessive which contrasts him, this also shows that he is confident and again he conforms to the stereotypical view of teenagers. Whilst talking on the phone on the bus, we see the two women sitting behind Tony, (medium shot) so we see the exact facial expressions and therefore there reactions to the topic of which Tony is talking about relatively loudly.

Skins also contains and tackles a few moral panics, for example the moral panic about 'the parents not knowing what their children are getting up to'. The daughter/ Tony's little sister is represented to be BINARY OPPOSITIONS

Compare and contrast the two texts with reference to the representation of conflict (8marks)
Both of the media texts have similar topics, such as the military and conflict. Conflict within the website is represented to be very brutal and bloody, therefore the images are 'raw', this symbolises that the images are not specifically taken for entertainment purposes. In
The shots are user generated content (UGC), this connotes
Moreover the institution CNN is represented by the website. This could lead to a wider audience demographic hence more money for the makers of the website. The wesite represents conflict to be very violent therefore this is reflecting the army lifestyle, this is kind of contrasted to the representation within the movie trailer, where the footage is seen to look 'cool', although still violent. Although the movie release date is this year, the issues tackled are contemporary and past issues, for example the it reflects the issues taking place in Libya.
Moreover the second media text represents the military as a whole to be fearless and this is emphasised by the soldiers fighting against aliens in order to save their country. All of the iconography used denotes the military and therefore connotes blood, violence, conflict and danger. The iconography consists of: weapons, vehicles, explosions and fighting these are all negative factors and are interrelated to the topic of conflict and destruction.
Within the second media text, a mix of diegetic and non diegetic music has been used this is used to create different effects. For example, when the non diegetic music get louder and faster, the audience know that the 'conflict' is going to become more brutal. This is contrasted with the videos in the first medai text, where the majority of the music is diegetic sounds which creates an atmosphere for the audience and one could say it emphasis the conflict and actions taking place.

Explore the view that the entertainment media feeds upon moral panic in the west as a result of terrorism post 9/11
You may refer to other media products to support your answer (12marks)
media texts entertainment are based on moral panics?
Moral panics are caused by status threatening issues and therefore, the 9/11 trauma caused a lot of moral panics within the American society. Although it is unclear of who was responsible for the 9/11 bombings Americas was affectly greatly because it it is the first attack for a very long time, and they were not expecting it. The entertainment media feeds upon moral panics by creating texts based on 'terrorism' , for example the Indian film based in The united States of America 'My Name is Khan', the film is about a muslim man living in America who meets a Hindu woman and her song son from a previous marriage. They both live together and start a relationship. However the family start experienceing post 9/11 prejudice in their community and even the son starts too turn against him. Whilst at school there is an argument among a group of people at school and the son is involved, he gets very badly hurt, the reason behind the conflict is because he is half muslim.
This film feeds upon 9/11 bombings, and the moral panics based around the bombings. However it is quite ironic how they have created a film based on the bombings however, there is no proof that it was a muslim/islamic attack on the americans, hence the film is presenting 'false consciouness'. But this is what the audience are interested in: conflict, these film raised A LOT of money and broke records for their representations.

What are the advantages and disadvantages for the military as an institution using the internet as a marketing tool?
You should refer to other media products to support your answer (12marks)

There are a variety of advantages and disadvantages for the military using the internet as a marketing tool. For example and advantage would be that the internet is free to anyone who has an internet connection (broadband or dial up), also the internet is a tool which is fast and easy to access. Websites can now be viewed on mobile phones and therefore, the niche audiences can keep updated when they want to, they are in control. One could say that the audience does not have control and that the makers and directors of the website determine what the audience view, not the audience choosing what to view. (Marxism and Hegemony) They want to make money and in order to do so they have too publish articles that the target audience demographic want to read, therefore they are choosing what the audience is exposed too, this could insinuate that the audience have no control. Anyone can use and access the webpage and hence is it an efficient way of marketing. Also the E-media is a viral platform which can lead too more and more people looking at the site and this may lead to more people joining the military. It is also easy for people who have any queries about the information on the website or job information to contact the military directly via email, and get a response relatively quickly (customer service).
Another disadvantage to the military using the internet as a marking platform is that the business person is isolated, and therefore there is no human contact between the customer/viewer and the maker, one could say that this could lead to lying and deception.
The internet exposes people to their websites globally therefore the majority of people.

A disadvantage of using the internet as a marketing tool is the shear competition between website owners because they all want their pages to get seen and moreover, be successful.
Also because the E-media platform is very popular and therefore in demand, website makers need to be very accurate in their presentation and their information which gets shared. Plus the site needs to be easy to locate, because if the site is hard to find the viewer may go through loads of sites and not even find yours.

Itv mini case study

From January 2006, the company used the name ITV Productions when making programmes for the ITV family of channels. From March 2009 the company has been fully re branded as ITV Studios Limited, which has also been extended to some productions for other UK broadcasters (such as Channel 4's Countdown) and to ITV's US arm

It is a channel which is broadcasted on terrestrial TV and therefore it is free to watch,, as long as you own a TV.

ITV Studios is a major commercial TV producer in the United Kingdom, creating over 3,500 hours of original programming each year across all genres except news. Programmes including Coronation Street; Emmerdale, Heartbeat, Marple and Agatha Christie's Poirot, Brainiac: Science Abuse, University Challenge, I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!, Parkinson, Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway, Tonight, The Jeremy Kyle Show, Allsorts and This Morning.

The audience demographic for ITV are 16-34 year olds

Using data ((e.g. from BARB)) compare audience figures for ITV shows in the 70s, 80s, 90s, and 00s

Since the 70s ITV's viewing figures have rised drastically this may be a result to the public becoming more financially stable also the TV platform has become more efficient.
In the 1970s viewing figures were around 20%, they have risen in the 2000s to 29%, hence more people are watching the channel and therefore the contents published by ITV is successful.
The whole idea of marxism and hegemony is relevant because, the publishers of ITV, want to make money and to do this the viewing figures need to be high and this can be done through creating programmes that are targeted at the demographic.

To what extent can ITV blame new media for its troubles?

TV v BBC: The World Cup's most one-sided contest?

Much like the England team, ITV could be forgiven for wishing they'd never bothered making the trip to South Africa, such has been the trouble it's brought them since boarding the plane.

The final insult, added to an injury-plagued month, appears to have been the most one-sided of final matches. Because while The Netherlands and Spain fought over a solitary goal during 120 minutes of football, the BBC was trouncing ITV 5:1 in the ratings war.

Both channels screened the final; the BBC securing an audience of 17.9 million at its peak while ITV was left with a high point of just 3.8 million.

ITV increased its audience by 8.6% in 2010 compared to 2006, while the BBC added just 5.3%.

What's the future for quality scripted drama on ITV?
http://www.itv.com/dramapremieres/marchlands/

I personally think that scripted drama pieces have no future due to the demanding nature of 'change', also in comparison to BBC dramas ITV dramas are quite subtle and not as staright forward and simplistic

The iPhone :
The iPhone has been a game-changing device in mobile telephony - why?

Can you account for its success?

How have other new media institutions reacted to Apple's dominance in the sectort?

How might iPhone and Ipod Touch applications transform our social and working habits?

Compare the iPhone to other smart phones like the Blackberry, Android, Pre, etc.
Speed-wise, all the above-mentioned Android phones run on speedy 1GHz processors, except the Milestone XT720, which runs on a 550MHz chip. Apple on the other hand, took its speedy A4 chip found on the iPad and put it in the iPhone 4 (no surprise here). With this, the iPhone 4 comes in line with the top-notch Android phone, but given the OS and app differences, a proper speed comparison would be quite subjective.
Moreover the iPhone four has the smallest display in comparison to the Android phones but the Retina Display technology in the iPhone 4 rivals even the huge 4.3-inch screen on the Evo 4G, packing in more pixels per inch. The camera on the iPhone 4 is now on the par with the Samsung Galaxy S, and still below the Incredible, Evo 4G or Milestone in terms of megapixels. All five phones can record 720p HD video though - yet only the iPhone will have the Apple-designed iMovies app, and nothing out today is remotely comparable to this in terms of mobile video editing.

Critical investigation

Critical investigation

First draft

According to becomeawag.com 70% of the female gender aspire to become or have aspired “to be a wag or a R n B rap star” My main magazine for analysis is GRAZIA magazine however, I may make references to other platforms and texts to back up my responses. The title GRAZIA means grace in Italian which one could say denotes that the readers and target audience demographic would be of an superior class and reasonably sophisticated. The font used is very sophisticated which reflects the target audience and is conventionally is in white which connotes elegance and simplicity. The colour white also connotes, delicate and innocence which could suggest that the magazine may impact them reader negatively (Gramsci(How the media impacts people))

In issue.... the celebrity presented is Jennifer Aniston and she is represented positively, she is a positive influence on middle aged women because she is successful, single beautiful and independent. She gets a reasonable amount of media attentions hence GRAZIA magazine use this to their advantage in order to sell their product. The image is a medium close up which keeps the readers attention on her, moreover, she is wearing neutral make up which looks elegant and sophisticated which once again reflects the magazines audience demographic. She is a role model for young to middle aged women due to her being fashionable and attractive whilst being a hard working career women. The image shown consists of her wearing a dress which is quite short which on could say connotes her femininity however one could also say that she is showing off because she knows that she is attractive. In all of the GRAZIA magazines the celebrities have their hair out, and therefore not tied or slicked back this signifies that hair out is what readers want.

Also the image is the focal point because the reader will decide whether or not to buy the magazine from their first impressions. “Jen: To blame for Courteney split” One could say that Jennifer has come in the public eye because of Brad Pitt and that she has become a figure to feel sorry for because her and Brad have divorced after his alleged adultery. Publishers only publish what they think will sell and therefore what will make them money, this is

According to Greene “You simply have to be present, in the right place at the right time.” Whereas “...public[ly famous] people were once defined as such based upon the fact that their remarkable skills had brought them to the attention of the public.” Greene. this reduces famous people down to them being noticing for being themselves, and therefore they are not famous for doing anything worth while. Expand I am not sure what to write

The fact that GRAZIA magazine has chosen to shorten Jennifer’s name connotes that they may have a positive relationship with her. Why is she getting blamed for something that has no proof? Could it be due to the fact that she is successful at what she does? GRAZIA magazine also have an e-media platform which supports the conventions of using celebrities in order to promote and sell their product When you enter the website you are greeted by catchy articles and images of/on celebrities.

Programmes such as, Celebrity big brother, X factor, I’m a celebrity, Britain’s got talent are all shows consisting of celebrities in some way or another. They are aired on terrestrial TV hence the viewings are considerably high because one could say most households have terrestrial TV. These shows are very popular and moreover the print platform can use this to their advantage by publishing story that directly link to the shows. In issue 294, the top left corner represent Cheryl Cole and Simon Cowell in a very ‘comfortable’ way. Even though the institution X Factor is not mentioned the reader automatically links the image with the show which may lead to sales of the magazine. The idea that both celebrities look very formal connotes that they are attending somewhere important? X factor is a programme that is recognised globally and therefore, it is a very good topic for GRAZIA magazine to discuss and create articles which are either factual or not.

The main colour scheme for GRAZIA magazine front covers are bright vibrant colours : orange, green this grabs the attention of the reader because it is eye catching and looks quite interesting. This colour scheme is unconventional, hence it goes against the stereotypes and typical concepts of a magazine. The layout is quite busy, with most of the text and images being placed at an angle which is quite unconventional compared to other magazines with a similar topic. The key signifiers within the GRAZIA front covers are the images which are conventionally a medium close up where the reader can see the closing of the celebrity. On the issues which i have been looking at, celebrities have been used as a selling point on all of them which signifies that celebrities are GRAZIA magazines focal selling point. On the right hand side of the front cover there is a section that reads “50 under £50” The language used communicates that the clothes are something to get excited about and the big lettering stands out plus the font looks like a marker pen, this is also quite unconventional which could connote that the audience demographic are sophisticated and classy even different. In addition using words such as 'secret, shock, new and details' it enforces the audience to buy the magazine and read it. Grazia usually has a sub heading which has changed historically from “BRITAIN’S FIRST WEEKLY GLOSSY” to “BRITAIN’S NO.1 GLOSSY” this connotes that the magazine has gained a sense of popularity and possibly since publishing got taken over by Bauer Consumption Media from EMAP PLAN. the whole idea that the magazine is on glossy paper informs the audience that they are choosing the best if they read GRAZIA. The writing is in capital letters and is therefore eye catching and one could say that it could influence “affluent” women to purchase the magazine. In addition

Most magazine front covers consist of a big image of someone ‘beautiful’, small catchy articles, bright colourful mise en scenes, and ‘Carlyo fonts’. The front covers have changed historically because when the magazine got published in Spain the effect was 2D, GRAZIA have now got a 3D effect on their page connoting that they are successful and that they have money to spend. They are one of the first magazines to go 3D which denotes that their selling techniques work and are therefore successful. On most of the GRAZIA magazine issues the top left corner consists of celebrities which acts like a reinforcement of the main image, this signifies that the readers of GRAZIA want to know about celebrities and their lifestyles.

This brings me nicely on to the whole prospect of the Marxism and hegemony. The target audience for GRAZIA magazine believe that they are deciding whether or not to purchase and read the magazine, however the publishers and editors pic and choose what to include, they only include stories and articles that will help maintain their dominance and control in society. They want to make money and they want to stay at the top of the hierarchy. For example in issue 303, Victoria Beckham has been used as the focal point of selling. The image is a medium close up and therefore you can see some of her features i.e her skinny frame and square jawline. “VICTORIA QUITS!” the exclamation mark adds emphasis on her action which also makes the statement stand out, therefore it is eye catching and may lead to people purchasing the magazine. Once again the magazine does not use the celebrities full name they seem to be denoted as having a connection and understanding with them.

The magazine is priced at £1.95, which is reasonably cheap considering that the target audience for GRAZIA magazine is affluent women. The magazine is published and issued weekly by BAUER consumption media founded in 1875, whom also publish other well known magazines such as Heat. Grazia magazine GRAZIA magazine see themselves as a very sophisticated and classy magazine establishment “GRAZIA readers are upmarket women in their 30’s. They are affluent, high spenders on fashion and beauty. The majority are married or living with a partner and working full time. They read GRAZIA avidly and cite its fashion content as their main reason to buy the magazine.” “Its target audience is 25- to 33-year-old urban, upscale, modern women, leading busy lives.” i do not know what to write about this :-/

There are a range of stereotypes available today but there are many women whom are excluded and therefore, they are unrepresented. The industry is run to sell a product rather than to reflect the reality of women’s lives today. The institutions want to sell their products and if that means ignoring unrepresented women, then so be it. This is reinforced by GRAZIA magazine, through the use of specific celebrities on their front covers, for example; Jennifer Aniston, Madonna, Cheryl Cole, Angelina Jolie, although the images look natural, however they have been airbrushed and photoshoped to a certain extent. All of these women are famous in one way or another they are also successful. GRAZIA magazine is a magazine focused on celebrity news and fashion hence the this is what the target audience demographic ‘expect’ from the magazine. In addition the audience may not purchase the magazine if it is not what they expect, for example if they were to include a random individual with no fame the target audience demographic may look at it ignore the magazine, therefore not purchasing it. In men’s magazines as well the stereotype is a man interested in fast cars, women, sports and music and again the number of men excluded is vast.

In the Spanish issues of GRAZIA celebrities also play a big part in marketing the magazine, and therefore the use of celebrities as a focal selling point is global.

Obesity as a disability or self inflicted state

Obesity as a disability or a self inflicted state

Obesity can be avoided and therefore it is not a disability, it is a self inflicted state where people eat over the RDA (recommended daily amount) and expect society and taxes to pay for their surgeries.

Whether a person’s obesity could fall within the definition of a disability found in the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (“the DDA”). The definition of disability in the DDA is that “… a person has a disability … if he has a physical or mental impairment which has a substantial and long term adverse effect on his ability to carry out normal day to day activities …”. Therefore, if a person’s obesity has lasted at least 12 months and substantially adversely affects his ability to perform everyday activities then it could be classed as a disability. However a disability is not self inflicted whereas obesity is and it can be avoided.

An obese person chooses to be obese, they eat irregularly and in excessive amounts if they were to eat the recommended daily intake their obesity would ‘disappear’ of course with exercise.

Children are increasingly becoming overweight and less physically active, to the point that childhood obesity is a global epidemic. Media use — including time spent watching television, playing video games and using a computer — has been identified as one of the contributing factors for a number of reasons, including the following:

  • There is considerable advertising and promotion of high-sugar, high-fat foods during children's programming.
  • Media use is displacing physical activity as children spend more and more time watching television and playing video games and less time being physically active.

Also channels like channel four broadcast the lives of obese people

How can you be addicted to eating, it may comfort you but surely there is a limit to what your body can handle you must feel

They are encouraging people to be obese because these participants get payed to participate.

It is a way for the producers, editors, directors, writers, to be in control and domineering over the public (Marxist) (Hegemonic) .

Influences ideologies and beliefs.

In order for Charlie to get his share he abducts Raymond.
